Split: the historic old town within Diocletian’s Palace
The historic core of Split developed within the walls of Diocletian’s Palace, a unique ancient complex that today functions as a living and permanently inhabited part of the city. Built in the early 4th century, the palace forms the heart of Split and represents a blend of Roman architecture, medieval structures and contemporary urban life.
A walk through the old town leads along narrow stone streets, past the Peristyle, through the palace cellars and along the remains of the original walls, which can be explored from both the inside and the outside. The area is compact and easy to navigate, making it ideal for unhurried exploration, with plenty of opportunities for short breaks and photography.
Within the palace and its immediate surroundings, visitors will find a rich gastronomic offering, ranging from traditional Dalmatian taverns to modern restaurants and small bistros. This combination of historical setting and active city life makes the old town a distinctive place to experience Split beyond classic sightseeing.
Visitor tip: we recommend visiting in the morning or during the evening hours, when crowds are smaller and the atmosphere more pleasant, especially during the summer months.
