Salona (Solin): Roman ruins near Split

Salona was one of the most important Roman cities on the Adriatic and the capital of the province of Dalmatia. Today its sprawling open-air archaeological site sits just ten minutes by car from Žnjan. Unlike Diocletian's Palace, Salona draws far fewer visitors, which makes the experience quieter and more personal.

On site you can see the remains of the city walls, forum, theatre, amphitheatre and Roman baths, as well as the complex of early Christian basilicas at Manastirine. The area is open and easy to navigate, and you can take as long as you like to walk through it. Combined with a short stop in Solin or a nearby viewpoint, it fits comfortably into half a day.
