Salona (Solin): Roman ruins near Split
Salona was an ancient city and one of the most important centres of the Roman province of Dalmatia, located in today’s Solin. It is now a spacious open-air archaeological site, well suited for a calm visit and a short trip just outside Split.
As you walk through the site, you can see sections of the city walls, the forum, a theatre, and an amphitheatre, along with traces of Roman baths and an aqueduct. The area is open and easy to explore at your own pace, with plenty of opportunities for photos and short breaks.
An especially interesting part of Salona is its early Christian heritage, including the Manastirine complex beyond the former city walls. If you’d like to extend the outing, Salona pairs nicely with a short stroll around Solin or a stop at nearby viewpoints.
Visit tip: we recommend comfortable shoes and water, and in summer it’s best to go in the early morning or late afternoon.
