Salona (Solin): Roman ruins near Split

Salona was one of the most significant Roman cities on the Adriatic and the capital of the province of Dalmatia. Today, its sprawling open-air archaeological site sits just a ten-minute drive from Žnjan. Unlike Diocletian's Palace, Salona draws far fewer visitors, which makes for a quieter, more personal visit, one where it's easy to find a moment entirely to yourself, without the crowds.

The site preserves remains of the city walls, forum, theatre, amphitheatre, and Roman baths, along with the early Christian basilica complex at Manastirine, one of the most important early Christian archaeological sites in the region. The grounds are open and easy to navigate, and exploring at your own pace can take as long as you like, with no fixed route or guide required.

Paired with a short stop in Solin itself or a nearby viewpoint, it fits comfortably into half a day. For those who want to extend the trip, there are also a few smaller spots nearby worth a brief stop. In summer, it's worth arriving earlier in the morning, before the sun makes a longer walk around the site less comfortable.
