Klis Fortress: history and the view above Split

Klis Fortress sits on a strategic pass above Split and played a key defensive role in the region for centuries, from the Illyrian and Roman periods, through medieval Croatian rulers, to the battles against the Ottomans. Today it's an impressive historic site and one of the finest viewpoints in the area, also known to many as a filming location for "Game of Thrones."

The visit is easy and doesn't take long. Wandering through the stone walls, passages, and interior spaces takes about an hour, and the information panels provide enough context without requiring you to rush. The fortress is made up of several connected levels, so as you climb toward the top the view opens up gradually and gets wider with each level.

The fortress's greatest asset is its panorama. The view stretches toward Split, the sea, and the surrounding mountains, and is especially beautiful in the late afternoon, when the light catches the city and the islands in the background. It's a great choice for a short outing combined with photography and a break in the fresh air, and at the foot of the fortress there are also a few spots where you can stop for coffee or a short rest.

A tip for your visit: the terrain is uneven in places, so comfortable shoes are recommended. It can get windy up at the fortress, especially outside summer, so bring an extra light layer.
